Terrafugia , a company made up of MIT graduates (obviously), has created the first flying car to be approved for the consumer market. The Transition goes from car to flying machine in just 30 seconds, and goes twice as fast in the air as on the ground. On the ground, it gets 30 mpg, and in the air, it can cruise at 115 mph for up to 450 miles. It runs on gasoline, and can be yours for only $200,000! You can get it as soon as late next year, and only need 20 hours of flight time to get your light sport aircraft license!

The FAA must be really into the idea of having a flying car , because they allowed Terrafugia to tack on another 110 lbs on top of the 1,320 lbs maximum weight for a light sport aircraft, all of which has been used to add further safety features.

A few months ago Motherboard writer Michael Byrne wrote about the joy of flight.
