Video: Crowdsourced Star Wars Remake Is Proof Of Internet's Nerdy Awesomeness
Posted by Martin_Connelly on Tuesday, Apr 13, 2010
Some things only make sense in a world with the Internet, and the Star Wars Uncut project is one of them. The mashup remake of everyone’s favorite space movie has been in the works since August of 2009 — and now it’s done! The official trailer is out, and the full film will be screened at the CPH:PIX festival in Denmark on April 19. New York Screenings are in the works.
Project Originator Casey Pugh used to work for Boxee and Vimeo, so he knows a thing or two about online video. After cutting the original Star Wars into 472 fifteen second clips, Pugh let people “claim” them. Individuals could claim up to three clips, and remade them in ways high-tech and low tech, from artful to (maybe just a little bit) awful.
Keep your eyes open for a screening sometime soon, and start plotting which 15 seconds of The Empire Strikes Back you want to claim for yourself. And if you feel like indulging your George Lucas disillusionment a little more, see the new doc People Vs. George Lucas, which is also, of course, crowd-sourced. (Screenings schedule here)
