Plastiki: Bringing More Plastic to the Pacific

After much delay, Plastiki is finally ready to embark on its eco-adventure, sometime soon. Plastiki is a sixty-foot boat made of plastic bottles and other recycled materials, sailing from San Francisco to Sidney in an effort to highlight the plight of the oceans. The voyage is the baby of publicity stuntman David de Rothschild, British banking heir and founder of Adventure Ecology. Rothschild uses his dashing looks, accent, beard, and adventurous spirit to attract endless media attention and corporate sponsorship. This time around, he’s adventuring to draw attention to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch — you know, that mass of trash that VBS visited in TOXIC: Garbage Island.

The boat is equipped with some crazy-cool green technology, including photovoltaic and thin-film solar panels, wind turbines, and stationary bike generators. There really will be recycled soda bottles inside Plastiki’s hulls (wow), but encased in non-recycled plastic (oh).

Rothschild and his crew will be blogging and tweeting using the HP computers on board, and you can track the journey on their website. Sorry, David, but the Kon-Tiki voyage across the Pacific in 1947 was a real adventure. That boat was made out of balsa wood, and tied together with hemp ropes.

If only all the plastic was plastic picked up from the gyre, then we'd really be doing something awesome.

I can't help but think of him as Desmond from LOST. Sailboat? Looks? Yep, definitely Desmond.
