Other Electronic Music: Tesla Coil Jam!
Posted by warmchip on Sunday, Mar 14, 2010
Dorkbot Austin, a hackerspace in the hometown of SXSW, held an event tonight and it was, well, electrifying. Featured were mind controlled gaming devices, iPod controlled vehicles, and more from Waterloo Labs, homemade electro music by Handmade Music Austin and Bodytronix, and Bre Pettis’s open-source hacktoys (see our Motherboard episode about his NYC Resistor).
Oh, and this awesome performance by ArcAttack featuring “singing Tesla coils.”!

Actually it is not pre-programmed. It is done with a fiber optic instrument/line-out mod that causes a triggering of the on-off switch using only 1's and 0's. Depending on the speed of the 1's and 0's the pitch of the electricity is changed because of the varying speed the coils are running at. Yes, tesla coils that large (really any size) will produce a noticeable pitch. By using the right or left side output on the instrument plugged separately into each coil they will fire at different times.

looks pre-programmed to me. The coils turn off & on in a sequence, the guy is simply there providing visuals. I wonder how he keeps from sweating; which is supposed to be deadly for that getup.
