WE'RE GOING TO SPACE! (Well, the Shuttle Launch Anyway)
Posted by Alex_Pasternack on Thursday, Feb 04, 2010
Holy. Ship.
Unfortunately, neither NASA nor our pal and spaceman Richard Garriott could hook us up with press credentials to hitch a ride to the International Space Station on Endeavor this Sunday. But we’re still psyched. We’re going down to Cape Canaveral to watch the blast-off.
It’s a bit of a bittersweet trip. The launch of Space Transport System 130 will be the fifth-to-last of the Space Shuttle program, and, given the Obama administration’s new budget and outline for NASA, another small step towards the end of government-funded manned spaceflight.
On the bright side however (the very, very bright side), this will be the shuttle’s last night launch, a magical event that gives kids a great excuse to stay up late and adds to the sheer holy F-ing (space)ship factor of this astounding marvel of human endeavor. Read about the STS-130 mission (meant to install a new living room and cupola to the space station) at Motherboard, at NASA, and watch updates and the launch on NASA TV.
If you’re dying to go and have questions for NASA scientists or fans of the space program, put them in the comments. And ditto if you’ve been and have any tips or ideas for us. If you’ve got great video or pictures or stories to tell, write your own post!
And if you’ll also be down in Florida for launch, get in touch with us — email me at alexp at motherboard.tv

Awesome encountering you guys along US1 Saturday night before the first attempt. We stuck it out another night, and just shared our video footage here on motherboard.tv of the launch from where you interviewed us at. Launch video: http://www.motherboard.tv/2010/2/8/sts-130-endeavour-launch

I went to a launch a long time ago. Definitely something you won't forget. The ground shakes like an earthquake. The strangest thing for me was seeing it so long before you sound hits you. It goes up and then a few seconds later this incredible gust of sound hits you like someone punched you in the gut. It's pretty incredible. Have fun!
