Chinese Hacker Turns Laptop Into Giant Touchscreen Phone

As the Google China hack sends the world slinking into more insane fear of the Middle Kingdom, it’s worth remembering that not all Chinese hackers are bad. Like our friends at NYC Resistor, some of them are homebrewing their own gear so they can talk to their friends and listen to European pop songs. Consider this DIY tech wizard, who voids the warranty on his Dell laptop to build what we were really hoping the iPad would be: a giant cell phone.

But might this fake Dell mega-phone itself be a case of Chinese fakery? Swarms of angry Photoshop-jaded commenters want to know, for instance, how a laptop screen becomes touch sensitive? Does it use a giant SIM card? Could hands that rubbery looking possibly be real?

Either way, this guy’s clearly a badass. He takes apart the friggin laptop and builds out of its parts a Zack Morris phone for the 21st century.

And as if his hacker skillz weren’t enough, listen to the brilliant music supervision: before calling his friend to show off his sound quality, dude pops in a mindblowing transition from The Chemical Brothers to this Scots-Irish pop singer whose music is part of the national English-learning curriculum in China. Edgy AND educational!
