Augmented Reality Games May Make Augmented Reality Interesting
Posted by Alex_ on Thursday, Aug 13, 2009
You know that process made popular by Hollywood where real things are blended with things generated by computers? It’s called augmented reality, and it’s actually really lame, in my opinion. Except! Videogame researchers are apparently pretty close to realizing it for their own purposes and now i’m mildly interested. Movie interpretations of augmented reality (AR) have been around forever, usually in dystopian futures where the real and the hyper-real have been blurred beyond distinction. But adding it to videogames is something different altogether.
In the past AR seemed destined to fail due to hardware impracticalities: no one wants to wear a helmet and lug around a giant backpack. The proliferation of mobile technology, however, has put the necessary hardware for fully functional AR literally into the palm of your hand. But does mini-ness make the concept any better? I’m hoping so, actually.
