I now heart James Cameron! Ew!

For many years I’ve been ambivalent about the work of movie director James Cameron. On the one hand: Terminator 2! On the other: Titanic? (My wife and I found that second film so annoying that she rewrote part of the Dion-ic theme song to go like this: “Near … far … we fucked in a car …”)

I’ve often found that his technical genius with manipulating special effects — the underwater magic of The Abyss and that weird liquid disolving stuff in T2 — has been overshadowed by treacly scripts and maudlin love stories.

But then I read this lengthy profile of Cameron yesterday and now I am more than a little bit in love. Let me count some ways he moves me: 1. He builds insanely complicated machines to make his movies and for his characters to wear (see photo). 2. He has been obsessively working on his newest film, Avatar, since first writing the script in 1994. 3. He says things like: “Tell your friend he’s getting fucked in the ass, and if he would stop squirming it wouldn’t hurt so much,” when he doesn’t care for the behavior of a studio suit and, “I don’t smile that broadly,” as an explanation for why he never got a broken tooth fixed. 4. He doesn’t get his broken tooth fixed.

Those are some reasons why I love James Cameron. I still maintain that his films are far from perfect but now I know that is certainly not for lack of trying.

John Carpenter made Escape From New York not James Cameron.

He did 'Escape from New York' and that justifies some man-love.
